What is Blogtober? What to Expect and How to Take Part

Updated: September 2021

Blogtober? I had never heard of it before 2018, but then that was my first year of blogging seriously. I was surprised to find out that blogging is so much more than writing down your thoughts and hitting “publish”.

Read on to find out what Blogtober is,  what you can expect to read here on Tea and Cake for the Soul during October, and how to take part if you are a blog reader or a blogger.

WHAT IS BLOGTOBER?

Blogtober is where bloggers from all over the world publish a post every day during the month of October. They also link up with other bloggers who are also taking part to share the love. Each year has it’s own hashtag last year was  #Blogtober20 and this year will be #Blogtober21

As a  blog reader, it’s a great way of getting to see what other content is out there, and as a writer, it’s fun to be able to write about anything you want.

WHAT IS A BLOG?

A blog is basically an informal website where readers can often sign up for an email subscription or follow on its attached social media. It can cover anything from health to money saving, from fashion to crafts, from music to travel, from parenting to just being someone’s online diary. In fact, anything goes.

Some bloggers write just because they enjoy it or believe in a cause, some to share their reviews and recommendations, and others run it as a business. They can make money from having ads, links to affiliated companies, and attract sponsored posts and collaborations from businesses once they have reached the heights of being recognised as an “influencer”.

Me? I just love to write and hopefully spread some nice thoughts to make people feel good, or give them useful information that might make their lives a little easier.

MY PERSONAL CHALLENGE

I saw Blogtober advertised in 2018 in one of the blogger groups that I’m in and without giving it much thought, I’m like “Yes I’m in!” Once I started, I realised that it was a HUGE undertaking, but my head had decided to do it so there was no way I could back out.

Some bloggers follow a prompt sheet to give them ideas and some just follow their own schedule. I went for the latter as my head was filled with so many ideas that I could write and post for three months solid if I had time.

WHAT TO EXPECT

There are some really important National Days happening this month, some of which I’m writing about, but I’ve also included traditional Tea and Cake for the Soul subject matter too.

NEW CONTENT

I’ve got several new posts for October 2021. I hope you’ll enjoy them.

REVISITING OLD CONTENT

As a blogger it’s always a good idea to revisit old posts and make sure they have up to date information and photos. I’ve used Blogtober 2019 and 2020 as an opportunity to do just that and will be sharing some recipes and updated posts from the travel, health, eco and tips sections.

HOW TO TAKE PART

Readers

The best way to join in with this is by signing up to receive emails every time I post something new.  You will receive a short extract first thing in the morning and you can then click through if it’s something that interests you.

You can sign up to this by filling in the FOLLOW BY EMAIL found on the right-hand side if you’re on a desktop or by scrolling all the way to the bottom of your screen if you are on a mobile device.

As I can’t commit to a full month of new posts this time due to aforementioned back problem, I will be sharing lots of other content on my social media channels so do sign up to follow those too. I generally post different content on each platform which you can read more about HERE.

Bloggers

There is a Blogtober Facebook group that you can join if you’d like a bit of interaction with other bloggers throughout the challenge. If you’re going it alone on social media, don’t forget to use the hashtags. Please let me know if you’re taking part. I’d love to see your posts.

If you are in need of some tips of how to get the best out of blog challenges then please see my HOW TO SURVIVE BLOG CHALLENGES post.

  1. I just had to see what Blogtober was! But, Jo, there is no way I could post every day for a month. I blogged once a week for 10 years, then over a year and half ago, when that got to be a bit much, I switched to every other week. That is feeling really good to me! So much so that I could never go back to once a week. So daily? I shudder to think. But you just enjoy the heck out of it, Jo! 😁

    • I couldn’t do it daily anymore either. My health now dictates that I blog when I am able, and my paid work takes priority. I do enjoy it when I can put a post out though, and hope I’ll get a few new ones out during Blogtober..

  2. I’ve never done Blogtober but you’ve kind of inspired me to give it a go. The idea of doing a daily post is most definitely overwhelming thought but perhaps if I start planning now then I might be able to do it haha! How did you find it though? I’d be interested to know your thoughts after doing it!

  3. Ah thank you so much. It’s my first go too. Although I’ve been blogging for 3 years, I’ve only been doing it seriously for 6 months and have learnt so much in that time, with lots more to learn as well. I just picked out some awareness days for starters, then fit in the topics that I usually write about.

I wrote them all in September, except one which I’m still to finish, but it has been a full time job. I’m finding some great blogs and meeting lots of new followers too though. I’m enjoying it 🙂
