Happy New Year. I hope you all had a good festive break and are now looking forward to this new year with optimism.
I started Tea and Cake for the Soul in 2015 predominantly to share my self-help tips for mental health and tell my USA road trip stories. I didn’t have any intention of it turning into what it has this year.
In 2018 I published blog posts regularly on all the subjects that I’m passionate about – 1) as I have a real love of writing and 2) because I feel that virtually everything I write might help someone out, whether it be with a tip, recipe, review or just give a few ideas of how to reuse your rubbish or spread some kindness.
Today I will share with you the top posts of 2018, tell you what you can expect in 2019 on the blog, and share some exciting news about my freelance writing career.
2018 Blog Achievements
Wow, 2018 has certainly been a year of Tea and Cake for the Soul. Even though it is a hobby, it has been a full time “job” for much of the year.
I produced 144 posts, had almost 10,500 visitors, over 17,000 views, and have grown my following past the 2,700 mark, with most of that occurring in the last 6 months.
Whilst those figures may not be massive in the world of blogging, they are growing steadily. It’s not just a game of numbers but I’m still pretty proud that people have enjoyed my words and are coming back for more.
I’ve learned that there is so much more to blogging than writing and hitting publish and I’m starting to put all that knowledge into practice. It is starting to show in my stats, but more importantly, I’m beginning to get more engagement on my blog posts. That in itself is so fulfilling.
For the bloggers reading this, I’ve also increased my DA (Domain Authority) score from 0 to 24 and my PA (Page Authority) from 0 to 32 this year. You can check your own scores free on MOZ.
This year, I have joined in with the two blogging challenges – Blogtober and Blogmas – where I posted every day during the months of October and December. I will be sharing my tips on how to survive and complete those challenges in the Spring.
Aside from those marathons, I have enjoyed sharing two or three posts a week covering a wide variety of topics. You can read more about what’s coming in 2019 below, but first I will share with you the top posts of 2018.
Top Blog Posts of 2018
1. Miles ahead of anything in first place as top blog post of 2018 is How to Survive a Car Boot Sale. This is something I wrote in the Spring of last year giving ideas of how to set up your stall, things that sell well and suggested prices. It continues to get views every week without any promotion. I will be writing a new one soon about how to get the most from car boot sales as a buyer rather than a seller.
2. Next up is Ecobricks – How to Reuse Your Non-Recyclable Waste. Again this is another that seems to attract its own attention. I discovered this innovative way of creating something usable from rubbish and felt so excited by it that I wanted to share with my readers. It has proved very popular. In my post, you’ll find the pros and cons, along with lots of useful charts, tips and links on how to make a successful ecobrick.
3. In third place are the Musical Features and Interviews which have proved extremely popular, all gaining similar viewing figures. This section has been a mix of people’s own stories and interviews that I’ve conducted. I guess this is where my experience and biggest passion lies. You can read the testimonials from people and companies that I’ve written for HERE.
My favourite post to write was My Fan Moment With Robbie Williams as I relived my own excitement from the actual moment that I saw him. I continue to get excited every time I get a comment on it so please leave your thoughts on it.
The following posts all got similar viewing figures:
How to Make Art & Upcycle Your Music Memorabilia (Crafts/Eco)
Dairy & Gluten Free Chocolate Brownies (Recipes)
Menopausal Beach Body Blues (Health)
How I Successfully Stopped Smoking – 9 Tips (Health)
Self Help for Your Mental Health (Health)
How To Reuse, Redistribute & Recycle Your Rubbish (Crafts/Eco)
Trick or Treat – Halloween Customs From Around The World (Celebrations/Blogtober)
Quintessentially English (Days Out/Photography)
I wonder which posts will be popular next year.

2019 Writing and Blog Goals
Even though the blog has only been running for 3 years I have been creating websites and writing for almost two decades for websites, books, and magazines. I’m excited to tell you that I’ve started writing for an online health website and this is something that I’m keen to do more of in 2019, with a view to making freelance writing my career in the not too distant future.
Read more about where I’ve already been published.
As for Tea and Cake for the Soul, I’m taking a little time out to update old posts and give the blog a bit of a makeover but then it will continue in pretty much the same direction in the Spring. My readers seem to enjoy the variety of posts and I feel that it also keeps my writing fresh and passionate.
I have lots of new music features and interviews in the pipeline and I really want to get more travel content written for both the UK and USA. I have so many places that I want to share with you in the form of free and cheap things to do, hotel reviews and some more luxurious treats such as where to go for the best massages in San Diego. It’s all written in my head or in draft, I just need to get it ready of publication.
And of course, I will point you in the direction of my freelance writing and health posts here on the blog.
