An Afternoon of Tea & Cake for the Soul with Goth Girl Reads

An Afternoon of Tea and Cake for the Soul is a regular feature where I chat to other bloggers to find out their thoughts and experiences on all the subjects that I cover on my blog.

Today we meet up with Kaitie from Goth Girl Reads who tells us how she soothes her soul with something from most people’s pasts. I think it is something that most of us still enjoy.

What is your favourite brand of tea and how do you take it?
Thank you so much for having me 🙂 And honestly, I’m not super picky with my tea but I do prefer any loose leaf tea. I find myself going back to Teavana, though, they have some great blends!

And cake? Do you have a recipe that you would like to share with us?
I’m not much of a baker, but my mom’s go-to recipe is Alton Brown’s carrot cake! I’m from the south, and carrot cake is a pretty big deal there, it has to be perfect, and this one’s delicious!

If you could have a celebrity afternoon tea, who would you invite?
Oh boy, that’s a hard one. Are we going with ~anyone~, dead or alive? If so I’d probably have to say either David Bowie or Tim Burton. They’re both such amazingly unique people, I’m sure they’ve got some amazing stories and great lessons to share.

What do you do to soothe or lift your soul?
I have to ‘soothe my soul’ quite often, unfortunately; it’s one of the many difficulties being bipolar and having chronic depression can bring. But I’ve found that my go-to solution is to watch a really happy, bright and colourful Disney movie. It just always lifts my spirits and makes me feel better; my most frequently-visited are ‘Wreck-It Ralph’, ‘Moana’ and ‘The Princess and the Frog’.

Do you like crafts, upcycling or DIY?
Honestly, I wish I was a bit more of a crafty person, but I think my creative talents only extend to my writing, and that’s about it. Maybe I should try some Pinterest crafts, or something?

I find people love my home or garden tips, do you have any of your own that you can pass on?
Use tons of essential oils! I love all the different scents, and a lot of them actually have healing and cleaning properties. If you have a steam mop, sprinkle drops of essential oil onto the pad (NOT into the water container!). You’ll get some beautiful-smelling steam while you clean! My favourites to use for this are tea tree oil and lemon oil.

Where is your favourite travel destination and why?
I’m not super well-travelled, I’ve been all over the United States but I have ventured much outside of it. My parents were in the military for a long time, so I was actually born in Japan. Unfortunately, we moved away soon afterwards so I remember none of it. Right now my top three destinations are Japan, Germany, and Iceland. All of those places are so beautiful, visually, and have some amazing cultures.

What sort of books or mags do you read?
I am always open to trying anything when it comes to reading; including biographies and non-fiction. However I find myself coming back to Fantasy, Y.A, and Horror, again and again, so I do mainly focus on those. One of my recent most favourite reads is called The Girl With All the Gifts by M.R. Carey; a science-fiction zombie novel. It’s not at all what you’d expect; it’s haunting, sad and beautiful, and surprisingly philosophical.

Do you have any health tips or experiences that you would like to share?
Ladies, get in the gym and lift those weights! They don’t have to be super heavy, but lifting weights have such amazing benefits for your muscles and bones, your body will be endlessly thanking you later in life!

Tell us about your blog
Goth Girl Reads is a book blog that is dedicated mainly to reading and sharing Young Adult, Horror, and Fantasy novels, though you could expect just a little bit of everything! As a writer, I also share writing tips and prompts, as well as share some bookish discussions, and some general, gothic things I find interesting.

My short-term goals include reaching 50 followers on my blog (halfway there!) and 200 followers on my instagram gothgirl_reads . My long-term goals include self-publishing some erotic, urban fantasy novels next year, and reaching 200 followers on my blog!

And finally, what’s your favourite section on Tea and Cake for the Soul?
Definitely the recipe section! I’m trying to get better at cooking and baking, so every little bit of inspiration helps!

Thank you so much for joining us Kaitie. Great tips with the essential oils and I’m always up for checking out a carrot cake recipe. Good luck with your blog and even more so with your novels.

  1. Great to meet Kaitie – thank you for sharing her thoughts. It’s lovely to hear about how you engage in self-care – Disney is a great tip. There’s something about the saccharine sweet that we all need from time to time. Checking out Kaitie’s blog now – I love a good book review blog!
